Theraplay

What is Theraplay

Theraplay is a guided, play-based therapy designed to strengthen attachment, self-esteem, and trust between children and their caregivers. Rooted in the natural, healthy interactions parents have with babies, it uses physical, interactive, and fun games to help children feel safe, regulated, and emotionally connected.

How It Works: Unlike traditional talk therapy or self-directed play therapy, Theraplay sessions are entirely directed and led by the therapist. The therapist guides the caregiver and child through simple, physical games—such as clapping to music, peek-a-boo, or gentle massage—to facilitate a direct, joyful bond.

The Four Core Dimensions

Theraplay interactions are based on four essential qualities found in healthy, attuned parent-child relationships:

Structure: The adult leads and creates organization, making the child feel safe and preventing them from feeling overwhelmed.

Engagement: The therapist or caregiver actively connects with the child’s body and mind, capturing their attention and sharing mutual joy.

Nurture: The adult provides calming, soothing care (like brushing hair or putting lotion on hands) that makes the child feel physically and emotionally valued.

Challenge: The adult guides the child through simple, achievable tasks that build confidence and resilience without promoting competition.

Who Benefits from Theraplay?

Theraplay is most commonly used for children under 12, though it can be adapted for teens and adults. It is highly effective for children dealing with trauma, adoption or foster care transitions, behavioral issues, or developmental delays caused by early attachment disruptions. To find certified practitioners or learn more about this approach, you can visit The Theraplay Institute.
